MARK MASYGA

NOVEMBER 11th ~ DECEMBER 17th, 2000

In his solo debut at eyewash, MARK MASYGA exhibits abstract oil paintings in a range of sizes that appear to be of, perhaps, fantastic construction sites. Also exhibited are his photographs of actual construction sites. He takes many pictures of the same site from different angles and lines them up and frames them. His paintings, interestingly, are not derived from the photographs; indeed, he's been doing similar-format paintings for years and only started taking the photographs last year, because they reminded him of his paintings. Here they serve as a sort of reference point to the paintings and enhance their simultaneously refined and raw beauty. Beyond the formal similarities between the photographs and the paintings in color and line, the paintings are made up of variously-colored abstract shapes that appear to be stacked, piled are attached to each other forming what looks like architects' drawings (of what?!) or aerial photographs of cities (in the Emerald City of Oz, perhaps). They seem to be of something always in progress, as opposed to resulting in a finished object or thing, always in an in-between state, where they are full of potential.

Artist, Educator and Curator Larry Walczak opened eyewash Gallery in May, 1998. He co-directs it with Curator/Dealer Annie Herron, who has had several galleries in NYC, including Semaphore East in the East Village, TEST-SITE in Williamsburg and Black+Herron in Soho. eyewash specializes in emerging and mid-career artists from the New York City area. It is located on the 4th Floor of a turn-of-the-century residential building. This former railroad apartment, with features such as a built-in cupboard, an armoire and a skylight provide for a singularly homey viewing experience, as well as supplying unique opportunities for art presentation and site-specific works. eyewash produces about six exhibitions yearly, each show lasting about six weeks. Artists who have had solo exhibitions at eyewash are: TED VICTORIA, GWENN THOMAS, LESLIE ROBERTS, LORI TASCHLER and ANGELA WYMAN. eyewash has produced solo debuts in NYC for JEANNE TREMEL, AMY CUTLER, CLARKE BEDFORD, HANNEKE VAN VELZEN and ELLIE MURPHY. eyewash occasionally has thematic group exhibitions as well, and is planning some exchange shows with European galleries.
