OFFBEAT, the last eyewash show,
featured diverse works dealing with satire, irony, silliness, visual
puns and other aspects of humor. OFFBEAT features assemblages, light projections,
neon sculpture, computer generated art, photographs and site-specific installations.
This group theme exhibition focused on off-center observations about
life and art. Nearly all the work included was new with site-specific installations
by both Lisa Hein and Bob Seng as well as Vitaley KOMAR and Alex MELAMID.
In the instance of the latter Alex Melamid worked with senior citizens from
local Northside Senior Center. He collected information on a new "school"
of painting called "neo-senilism". Together with his partner Komar,
they created an installation based on this idea. Other participants included
recent New Museum retrospective artist Martin Wong, Los Angeles-based-artist
Bruce Houston, musical instrument maker and performer Ken Butler, light-box
specialist Ted Victoria, and direct from his week-long performance at Socrates
Sculpture Park, Ward Shelley.
This was a unique collection of outstanding contemporary art that is
both enlightening and entertaining.
